POUGHKEEPSIE,
N.Y. – A Poughkeepsie High School senior has died due to complications from the
Powassan virus.

Seventeen-year-old
Joseph Elone died on August 4.

A memorial
service was held Friday night at the Hudson River Rowing Association Boathouse
in Poughkeepsie.

The
Powassan virus is a disease carried by ticks and has been fatal in 30% of the
reported cases.  Scientists say a tick
will transmit the virus within 15 minutes of latching onto a human.  However, symptoms can take up to three weeks
to appear.
