Fallen Schenectady firefighter remembered

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Firefighters from across the Capital
Region joined together Friday to remember a fallen hero, Schenectady Fire
Department Captain John Nicol Jr., who died this week as a result of an ATV

St. John Evangelist church in Schenectady filled
with friends, family, and loved ones for the 47-year-old captain's wake. 
Those who came say Schenectady has lost a true hero.

Nicol became a Schenectady firefighter in 1990, rising through
the ranks, even serving as a deputy chief for a period of time. 

Many firefighters joined together in a processional and then
a prayer vigil to honor their fallen partner. Those who worked alongside him
say he was a shining example of what a firefighter should be. While he was
known for being a leader, he was also known and relied upon to lift people's

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at St.
John Evangelist church at 10 a.m.
