MALTA, N.Y. – To celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, women will gather in communities across the world to take part in the Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event.
A local gathering will be held at the Malta Community Center on Saturday, August 3rd, from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
According to organizers, the event raises awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for global support. The first Big Latch on was held in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2005, and in 2012 over 8,862 children were counted as participating in the event.
The World Health Organization recommends mothers breastfeed exclusively up until the child reaches 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond.
