COLONIE, N.Y. – Thursday night, the town of Colonie passed
strict new legislation that will make it difficult for motel owners to expand
or build new motels along the route.
For the past three years, a moratorium in Colonie has
prevented any additional motels or motel rooms from being built on Central
Avenue, between the Albany and Schenectady lines, but that ban expires next
Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan drafted a new law,
holding motel owners more accountable for who they let rent their rooms.
Thursday night, town and county officials voted on the law
that would make it more difficult for motel owners to expand or build more than
the 22 motels by forcing them to follow mandated safety provisions for tenants
who cross busy Central Avenue, and hold motels owners more accountable for who
they rent rooms to.
