Former Clermont firefighter arrested for fire house burglary

LIVINGSTON, N.Y. – Two men have been arrested after State Police caught them in the act of breaking into the Clermont Fire Department to steal diesel fuel.

After the department filed a formal complaint, State Police conducted surveillance operations and a lengthy investigation into the alleged theft before apprehending former firefighter Peter Brillis, of Livingston, and Shawn Hegarty, of Tivoli, on June 30.

Police say they believe that over the course of several months, the two men stole more than $1,000 in fuel from the department.

Brillis and Hegarty were charged with Burglary in the 3rd degree and Larceny. They were arraigned in the Town of Germantown Court and remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond.
