Time running out for last minute deals at Capitol

ALBANY, N.Y. — More work needs to be done at the Capitol as the Women's Equality Act was the only piece of legislation passed Thursday.

The Senate is powerless to do anything until after midnight.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver applauded his fellow state legislators for passing the bill.

“A woman should always have the right to own and control her own body,” Silver said.

The bill now sits on the desks of New York Senators who are likely to split the bill into its ten components and vote on them separately because of the controversial abortion proposal emphasizing a woman's right to choose.

“It's my understanding that the coalition will only bring nine bills out,” Senator Neil Breslin said.  “So it seems to me it will be impossible to pass.”

Breslin said the Senate also has hours of debate ahead on casino gambling and Governor Cuomo's economic development plan, “Start-Up NY”.

“I expect to be here until the early morning hours and again tomorrow morning,” he said.
