WATERVLIET, N.Y. – A 30-year-old man is under arrest and awaiting arraignment after police say he killed his 51-year-old roommate and then tried to cover up the crime before calling 911.

Watervliet Police say Brandon Burritt, 30, killed his roommate David Hochsprung during an argument, then staged the crime scene and injured himself with self-inflicted stab wounds to his stomach area and neck in an attempt to cover up the crime before calling 911 for assistance.

Police responded to a 911 call on Sunday April 21, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. for a man stabbed at 1618 5th Avenue in the city.  When they arrived, officers discovered Burritt, 30, at the bottom landing of the 2nd floor apartment.  Burritt was suffering from obvious multiple stab and slash wounds to his upper chest and neck area.  He indicated that there was a second subject upstairs in the apartment.  Further investigation into the apartment revealed David D. Hochsprung, 51, unresponsive on the couch in the apartment.  He had also incurred multiple wounds on his head, neck and torso area.  WFD EMS responded, but Hochsprung had succumbed to his injuries.

Burritt is currently at the Watervliet Police Department awaiting arraignment.
