ROTTERDAM, N.Y. — Crews in Rotterdam have capped the massive water main break and reopened roads after nearby streets and some homes were flooded Friday.

A massive 20-inch transition main broke pouring water into the street.

“The surface is constantly shifting and it could've put the main on a rock.  There are still a lot of variables,” said Jim Longo, Rotterdam Superintendent of Highways.

Crews worked as quickly as they could to try and control the waters -but with a main this size there isn't much you can do right away except make sure people living around the area are safe.

“Obviously with flooding and electricity we brought in crews to shut off power in the homes,” said Longo.

Neighbors along Hollywood Avenue immediately started cleaning out their basements because water levels that began at just a few inches flooded the road in under an hour.

Antonio Rizzo said he got a call from his wife just as he was about to turn into his street and he realized just how bad it was.

“I've been here for eight years and I've never seen anything like this,” said Rizzo.

Crews did cap the broken pipe before the neighborhoods flooded completely, but Rizzo says it was a little too close for comfort.

“Being that my yard is kind of a hill I didn't think it could get up this high.”
