Clifton Park woman latest victim of phone scam

PARK, N.Y. – The Saratoga County Sheriff's office is warning residents of a
phone scam after a local elderly woman lost $750 and could have lost more if deputies hadn't been alerted in time.

A call
from Trustco Bank in Clifton Park caught the attention of deputies when an
employee reported an 88-year-old Clifton Park woman withdrawing a large sum of
money. She told the employee that she had won a $1 million and had to give the
grantees money in order to get her check.

The woman
had already purchased two green dot pay pal cards worth $750 and the card
numbers were given over the phone to an unknown male claiming to be the
controller of her $1 million check. The male then told her to get $3000 more
worth of green dot pay pal cards and give him the numbers.

The woman
was about to go and get the additional $3000 worth of cards, but was warned of
the scam by sheriff deputies before she could.

The male

deputies were present.

sheriff's office suggests that anyone who is asked to send money because they
won a large sum of money to thoroughly look into the offer and research.
