National Grid cautioning customers about phone scams

ALBANY, N.Y. National
Grid is warning its customers to be cautious of people calling and asking for
their personal banking or credit card information.

Recently, several National Grid
customers have fallen victim to callers purporting to be from National Grid,
and getting personal and confidential banking information from them over the
phone.

The scammers threatened power
turn-offs if they did not disclose the information.

National Grid urges customers to
verify the identity of anyone who calls claiming to be from National Grid and
asks for banking information.  The easiest way to handle this is to tell
the caller you will call them back, then contact National Grid at
1-800-642-4272 and ask to speak to a supervisor in the disconnections
department.

Customers who fear that they have
fallen victim to the scam should immediately contact local law enforcement
officials in their area.
