SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — It's already a casino in name, now Saratoga Casino and Raceway wants to make it official.
The first “racino” to open in New York nearly nine years ago, offering video lottery terminals, SCR hopes to become one of the first three casinos in the state — that is if the legislature approves the governor's plan.
“We would hope that it means table games. There's potential for hotels and for additional items as well,” said Rita Cox.
Cuomo included that initiative in his state of the state, citing it as economic development.
“We propose a casino gaming plan to boost upstate development,” he said Wednesday.
Officials with the Saratoga Casino and Raceway say they've already proven they can do just that.
“We've already generated a significant amount of funds for education in the state of New York and we are poised and ready to further increase those funds if we were to become one of those facilities,” said Cox.
Saratoga Springs and Saratoga County have both already passed resolutions approving a casino, intending to send a clear message to the governor that they want it.
Jeff Clark, president of the Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association told NEWS10 a casino would provide a bigger draw.
“Those folks that go there for the gambling tend to go down in the city, downtown to other places to eat to dine, to have a good time with their friends and to shop for souvenirs for their families back home,” said Clark.
