SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Officials tell NEWS10 the investigation into the death of a WWII veteran found outside in the cold at Maplewood Manor continues.
Authorities say Carlton Decker died from a heart attack, but an investigation is underway as to how the 85-year old was able to get outside to a courtyard at the county nursing home.
That's where he was found around 1 a.m. on Dec. 22. Family members say Decker had been wearing an ankle bracelet that should have alerted staff.
A statement released by the county board of supervisors says nursing staff had seen Decker in his room during bed checks at 11 p.m.
D.A. Jim Murphy says that depending on what the investigation finds, there could be criminal charges.
