Glens Falls mayor looks to curb violence by closing bars earlier

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – An attack over the weekend in Glens Falls that left a man with broken bones has sparked a new proposal for bar owners.

According to Glens Falls police, a man was attacked Saturday morning and beaten in a South Street parking lot. Jesse Tracy, 29, has been charged with felony assault in connection to the case.

The incident is one of many occurring on South Street, according to police.

Glens Falls Mayor Jack Diamond says that for him, the incident was the last straw. He has proposed city bars close at 2 a.m. instead of 4 a.m., because according to police that's when most of the alcohol-related incidents occur.

“Assaults on our patrol division, assaults within the city of Glens Falls, DWI's, drug activity, alcohol related incidents – they all seem to occur more often than not between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m,” said Diamond. “It's going to quiet down the activity on South Street. We're going to do other things within our police agency that we need to be doing that we're not doing.”

Starting Friday, police say they are stepping up patrols.

“We're reassigning other members of the police department to locations within that area of South Street to ensure that the quality of life and the initiatives are ongoing,” said Diamond.

He says he wants to work with bar owners on the problem but that they need to follow the rules too. “The three biggest offenders are located on South Street and they're over serving – there's no question about it to me that they're over serving.”

On Thursday, the mayor will present statistics and reports on those incidents occurring on South Street to the city council.
