ALBANY, N.Y. – Drive home after you drink, spend a night in the clink.
That's the message from Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple while announcing the details for the 29th Annual New Year's Eve Safe Ride Program.
Free rides will be provided in Albany County from 10 p.m. on New Year's Eve until 2 a.m. on New Year's Day.
All you have to do is call 1-800-law1010 to request a ride.
Sheriff Apple says there's no excuse not to be safe, but he's promising consequences if you don't.
“My words are simple; you wanna drink and drive you're going to jail. That's our jail behind you, we like the vacancies, we don't want you on the road ways, but if you drink and drive that's probably where you're going to end up,” said Apple.
The safe ride home program started in 1982, and Apple says there have been no alcohol related fatalities on New Year's Eve in Albany County during that period.
