BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – High winds have knocked out power to more than 20,000 utility customers in eastern New York, while several inches of snow has already fallen in some upstate areas as a storm barreling out of the West reaches the region.

Most of the outages Friday afternoon are in neighboring Rensselaer and Columbia counties, where 18,000 home and businesses have lost electricity service. The National Weather Service says wind gusts have topped 40 mph in some eastern areas.

The weather service has issued storm warnings until later Saturday afternoon for an area stretching from New York's southwest corner to the Rochester area. Friday's rainfall is giving way to snow storms that have dumped up to 4 inches in parts of northern New York.

Forecasters say the snow total could be more than a foot in some areas in western New York.
