No school for Galway students Friday

GALWAY, N.Y. – No school in Galway Friday because too many students just don't feel like going to class – literally.

A nasty stomach bug is going around the Galway Central School District, leading administrators to take a highly unusual move – canceling all classes along with activities for Friday.

The Galway Central School website states: “No students or employees are to come
in with the exception of those who will be thoroughly cleaning and
sanitizing the building in an effort to help keep everyone healthy.”

NEWS10 caught up with school board member and parent Tom Rumsey who supported the decision, saying it's better to be safe than sorry.

The school district says they've had 90 cases of the stomach bug reported so far, with 922 students enrolled. That's about ten percent of the student body. Symptoms of that illness are viral; students have reported having headaches, fever and vomiting.

While students are home, employees will be brought in to sanitize the building on Friday. Rick Daltilao, a cleaner at the school for 21 years, explained what is likely to be involved in that process. “Disenfecting all the walls, and give it a good thorough going-over,” he said. Daltilao was working despite feeling a little under the weather himself.
