ALBANY, N.Y. – An 84-year-old man finally had his Purple Heart medal returned to him by an area collectibles dealer, several years after the medal went missing.
The Albany County Dealers Association says the owner of The Collectors Friend in Rensselaer, Mike Russell, was suspicious when a 24-year-old man attempted to sell the medal to him.
Most medals are inscribed with a name on the reverse side, so when Russell bought the medal from the man he was able to search for the victim's name and find the recipient of the medal.
Several years ago the Purple Heart medal went missing from the recipient when he lost it in a parking lot and the 24-year-old apparently picked it up.
Purple Heart is a military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those who have been wounded or killed in service to their country.
Russell soon after returned the medal to the victim.
