Shoppers hit stores with plans, maps as Black Friday begins

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. – Hundreds of people began waiting outside of the Target in East Greenbush as early as 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day – all for the chance to have first choice when the store opened later that night.

The excitement was high as Black Friday shoppers headed out, maps in hand ready to scout out the deals.

“Dinner was done, the dishes were done and now Black Friday here we come,” yelled Joanne Rizzo of Staten Island.

The Rizzo family did whatever they could to keep warm as they waited in line for hours outside of Target Thursday night and that included singing Christmas carols. The Rizzo's weren't just out for themselves though. Seeing friends and family impacted by Sandy inspired them to give back among all the shopping madness.

“I'm just looking to buy some stuff so I can bring down there to people in need. Hats, scarf's, gloves, cleaning supplies because they need it,” said Rizzo.

For some Black Thursday did take over their Thanksgiving.

“I boycotted Thanksgiving this year for this so I'm not doing it until Sunday,” said Darrin Failla of North Adams, Massachusetts.

The crowds were fierce and the lines long.

“It started getting crazy. People just taking things when they shouldn't be. People just blocking off ways so yeah it got crazy after a little while,” said Mike Brosch of Troy.

For many families it was worth it.

“I really just came for the jeep. I just wanted my granddaughter to have this and I wouldn't pay the regular price for it but when I saw this price I couldn't resist,” said TC Carrier of Syracuse.

“We probably saved $50 on the TV stand alone. We saved over $100,” said Teresa Foster of Staten Island.

And just in time for Black Friday, Google added a new feature to Google Maps to help shoppers and travelers plan their trips in advance.

Users can now access the indoor floor plans of more than 10,000 locations around the world using Google Maps on their Web browser.

“Before heading home for the holidays or out to shop on Black Friday, check out indoor maps of the airport or shopping mall on your desktop to better plan your trip,” Google Maps wrote in a Google+ message announcing the development Wednesday.

Google has provided a list with participating places, which includes museums, casinos, universities, sports venues and more.

Although local malls have not yet made the list, a few big retailers have:

  • Best Buy
  • Bloomingdale's
  • Home Depot
  • Ikea
  • Macy's
  • Petsmart
  • Sports Authority
  • Toys R Us

Store owners who would like to add their floor plans can do so with the Google Maps Floor Plan tool.

The application can be used on desktops, Android systems, and iPhones in a Web browser.
