DALTON, Mass. – Police in Dalton say a man was left seriously injured after a dog, which was later shot and killed, attacked him outside his home on Thursday.

The man was sent to Berkshire Medical Center with bite wounds to his face and the left thigh, after police say two “very aggressive” dogs that lived in a neighboring apartment attacked him.

One dog, a male dog which police say was too dangerous to attempt to capture, was shot and killed. The second dog, a female, was captured by police using a noose and sent to a local animal shelter to be quarantined for at least 10 days.

The attack happened around 4 p.m. when the victim, whose identity has not been released, was returning to his home on Gertrude Street.

When officers arrived on the scene the pit bull-type dogs were running loose outside and the victim was inside with serious, yet non-life threatening injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

Police say the dogs' owner was not home at the time of the attack.

The investigation is continuing into if any animal codes were violated.
