Candidates vying for the 20th Congressional District debate

NORTH GREENBUSH – The candidates vying for the 20th Congressional seat went head to head Thursday night.

Representative Paul Tonko and Republican Glenville businessman Bob Dieterich had their first and only televised debate was held on WMHT-TV.

They squared off on a host of issues, from foreign policy to the national debt, even hydrofracking.

Tonko, a Democrat from Amsterdam, is a two-term incumbent. He served for more than two decades in the New York State Assembly before moving up into Congress.

Dieterich is new to politics, a Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the First National Bank of Scotia. He also served for a decade as a member of the NY Air National Guard.

Both expressed the importance of the middle class and agreed that Congressman need to work across the aisle.

Tonko pushed the innovation as a way to bring jobs to the area. While Dieterich focused on the need to simply raise awareness of the high unemployment rate.
