NY report expected on spike in race horse deaths

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – New York state is expected to issue a report soon on a spike in deaths of race horses at the Aqueduct track.
Four industry experts have been reviewing the deaths of 20 horses at Aqueduct's thoroughbred track over four months earlier this year.
The report comes as Gov. Andrew Cuomo prepares to sign a law that will give him temporary majority control of the New York Racing Association board.
Cuomo has criticized NYRA's management and wants significant changes, possibly including hiring for-profit companies to run racing and operations.
The report coming as early as Friday could strengthen Cuomo's case for major changes.
NYRA has held the franchise to operate the Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga tracks since 1955. Its history has been marred by management scandals and bankruptcy.
