Erie Canalway survey to determine economic impact

ALBION, N.Y. (AP) – Visitors to the Erie Canalway Trail this summer shouldn't be surprised if they're approached by college students with survey forms.

State University of New York at Geneseo students are surveying up to 800 trail users to gather data on demographics, trail usage, spending patterns, and overall trail experience.

The Erie Canalway Trail will link the Hudson River and Lake Erie. More than three-quarters of the 348-mile trail is completed.

The students are helping with research to determine the economic impacts of the Erie Canalway Trail on New York's economy. Study results will be published in early 2013.

The students also will survey local business owners and government officials.
