Police: Man spent 4th of July burglarizing home

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. – While many residents were out of their homes watching fireworks on the night of July 4th, one burglar was hard at work, police in East Greenbush say.

The East Greenbush Police Department says that 22-year-old John Halacy, of Rensselaer, broke into a home just off Columbia Turnpike around 9:30 p.m. and stole a computer and iPad. They say he also allegedly tried to steal a big-screen television but it was apparently too heavy to handle.

Police located witnesses and used a variety of forensic and electronic resources to identify Halacy. He was arrested on Wednesday and charged with Burglary 2nd and Grand Larceny 4th, both felonies.

He has been remanded to the Rensselaer County Jail on $10,000 bail.
