Man sentenced for killing son, son’s girlfriend while drunk driving

TROY, N.Y. – A man convicted of killing his son and son's girlfriend while driving drunk last July has been sentenced Friday in Rensselaer County Court.

51-year-old Philip Dobert agreed to a plea deal in March to driving drunk and speeding while he crashed his car into a utility pole on Route 40 Schaghticoke in July 2011 killing his son, 20-year-old Kyle Dobert, and his son's girlfriend 20-year-old Alisha Schoonmaker.

On Friday, Dobert was sentenced to 7 to 21 years in prison. Schoonmaker's mother, father, and step-father spoke during the victim impact statements in court.

Authorities say he had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when he crashed his car. Prosecutors say he was coming from his other son's grave site and was driving at least 75 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour speed zone when he hit a pole near the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds.

Dobert has been convicted twice before for drinking and driving. This was Dobert's second DWI conviction in the past ten years.

Schoonmaker's mother says the family will be holding a memorial scholarship fundraiser for Shenendehowa graduates this Sunday from 3-9 p.m. at Trick Shot Billiard in Clifton Park. The scholarship will be held in both victim's names, and will work to change DWI sentencing guidelines.
