RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) – The Vermont State Police says a man wanted by authorities in New York was shot and killed by a trooper in Rutland after the man ignored police orders and pulled a handgun from his waistband.
Police have not released the name of the man who was shot at about 9 p.m. Thursday.
Police say Trooper Christopher Lora stopped a vehicle in Rutland and then learned that one of the occupants was wanted in New York on a probation violation charges and that he was likely armed.
Police say the suspect then got out of the car and refused to obey police commands. He was shot by Lora after he drew a handgun.
Vermont State Police Col. Thomas L'Esperance is planning to release more information about the shooting on Friday.
