Local woman accuses Albany cop Of excessive force

ALBANY, N.Y. — Fultonville native Courtney Mahoney claims Albany police Officer Bob Schunk used excessive force while breaking up a fight at a Pearl Street pizza place shortly after last weeks St. Patrick's Day parade. Mahoney says she and her friends were trying to grab a slice.

Here's how Mahoney said it happened.

“He turned to us and said, get the 'F' off the sidewalk, then he started pushing us that way,” she told NEWS10. “And he said, 'If you don't get off the sidewalk, I am going to pepper spray you all.' He sprayed us. Got my friend in the eye. We were upset. We were like what did we do? We did not do anything.”

Mahoney's friends wrote up complaints. One friend said Officer Schunk grabbed him in the throat and face.

This is not the first time Officer Schunk, a 12-year veteran of the force, has been in the news.

In 2005, he was charged with drunk driving after smashing his car into a parked minivan. Three years later, he was one of two Albany officers who shot at a would-be armed robber. Both were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing.

Now, Mahoney is taking her complaint to Mayor Jerry Jennings and says she doesn't want to come to the city again.

NEWS10 spoke with Jerry Jennings' office. They told us they have received the complaints and handed them over to the police.

Detective James Miller of the Albany Police Department told us he just found out about the matter Friday afternoon and that police are now looking into the matter.
