Schenectady man sent to prison for killing wife with hatchet

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) – A 61-year-old Schenectady man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing his wife with a hatchet as she slept.

Guyanese immigrant Yetraj “James” Mangar was sentenced by acting Schenectady County Judge Richard Sise on Wednesday in exchange for pleading to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter.

Mangar had faced a 25-years-to-life sentence if convicted of the second-degree murder.

Authorities said the couple had a history of domestic problems at the apartment they shared with their two adult sons and the sons' wives.

Mangar's 56-year-old wife, known as Sister Satie, died of a fractured skull and brain injuries in October 2008.
