NY Jan. unemployment rate was 8.8 percent

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – New York State's unemployment rate dipped from 8.9 percent in December to 8.8 percent in January.

The state Department of Labor says the jobless rate was 7.1 percent in January 2009.

The U.S. unemployment rate decreased from 10 percent in December to 9.7 percent in January. In January 2009, the nation's rate was 7.7 percent.

New York City's rate decreased from 10.5 percent in December to 10.4 percent in January. The rate outside of New York City dropped from 7.8 percent in December to 7.7 percent in January.

The labor department says the state's private sector job count peaked at 7.3 million in April 2008. It has lost 352,700 jobs since then.
