Men's Hockey Releases 2007-08 Schedule
SCHNECTADY, NY – Union Athletics has announced the 2007-08 men's ice hockey schedule, which features 13 non-league games against national and international opponents from four different conferences, along with two regular-season tournaments.
The Dutchmen open the 2007-08 season at home on October 12 and 13 against the Ferris State of the CCHA and follow with a road trip to RIT of the Atlantic Hockey Association on October 19. “Ferris has always been an extremely good road team and they're very well coached,” commented Leaman. “We're going to have our hands full right from the start, which we're looking forward to.”
“RIT has a very small rink and they bring in good crowds, so it will put us in a very uncomfortable environment early in the year, which will be a great test for us,” he continued.
Union closes out the month of October with the second Governor's Cup at the Times Union Center in Albany, facing Rensselaer on Friday, October 26. The Dutchmen will then face either ECAC Hockey League regular-season champion St. Lawrence or Colgate.
Union welcomes Brown and Yale to Messa Rink on November 2 and 3 to start ECAC Hockey play. After a trip to Dartmouth and Harvard the following weekend, the Dutchmen have a week's break for exams before traveling to Massachusetts for a November 23 game.
Union resumes league play with games at Quinnipiac and Princeton on November 30 and December 1, and then face a pair of Hockey East opponents. The Dutchmen travel to Providence on Friday, December 7, for a 7 p.m. game at Schneider Arena, and return to Messa Rink to host Northeastern in a 7 p.m. game.
Union hosts Nebraska-Omaha for a two-game series on December 14 and 15, for the teams' first meeting since the 1997-98 season. “They are traditionally a skilled, fast team and we're looking forward to that challenge,” stated Leaman about his first career games against the Mavericks.
After the holiday break, the Dutchmen return to action in a three-game tournament at the University of New Brunswick to close out the 2007 calendar year. “We'll get to play three games in three nights and we will face the Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions. It will get us back into shape and into game form quickly,” commented Leaman on the exhibition games.
The Dutchmen host Connecticut on January 4 and travel to Army the following night before resuming league play for the remainder of the season. Union hosts Colgate and Cornell on January 11 and 12 before playing a home-and-home series with Rensselaer the following weekend.
The Dutchmen wrap up January on the road at St. Lawrence and Clarkson before playing six of nine February games at Messa Rink, starting with a four-game homestand during which Union will face Princeton, Quinnipiac, Harvard and Dartmouth. After a weekend trip to Cornell and Colgate on February 15 and 16, Union returns home to face Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The Dutchmen finish the regular season at Yale and Brown on February 29 and March 1. “It's good to be home down the stretch. We've played well at Messa Rink the last two years,” said Leaman.
Union finished the 2006-07 season with a 14-19-3 record and a winning home record for the second consecutive year. The Dutchmen return 20 letter-winners to the 2007-08 squad, while bringing in an seven-member class of 2011.
